women and girls and self-defense

After reading about the terrible rape of a girl by a whole football team (she had been drugged heavily after being kidnapped), which they videotaped and posted on Facebook, I want to get up on my soapbox with a giant megaphone and shout to all parents out there that their daughters should learn self-defense!
Shocking to me, also, is the amount of support the rapists have gotten, and the death threats the victim and her family have received. People say the boys didn't know any better!!! Well, who raised them?!? What sort of society is this? Girls, get strong and learn self-defense, and arm yourselves if you feel comfortable with that, because this society is not going to protect you!
I'd better stop now before I REALLY begin to rant and rave. I am remembering Mr. Bronson's talk at class last night, about not living TOO much in the feeling of being disappointed in this society and culture...

This is very well said. I am amazed at the amount of boys that I have in class compared to the amount of girls. I hope that people will see this post and think more deeply about their daughters getting involved in the practice of self defense.

I can't couch my thoughts so politely anymore, the time for that seems to be over. This world now requires something harsher and more direct. Thanks for all that you do!

Hmmm. Upon reading my reply to Mr. Bronson's comment, it is unclear and could seem rude. I meant that it's time for us to act, get our girls into martial arts. I meant that the time for politely couching my thoughts is over. Now it's time for action, learning self-defense, not couching things politely. I hope it didn't look like I was responding rudely to you, Mr. Bronson!
