Qi Gong class

I just wanted to share some thoughts after yesterday's QiGong class. Something just clicked into place when Mr. Bronson taught us about having access to lightness and happiness, using memory. Based on what's been happening so far, it's changed my life! That was definitely missing from my practice. I tend to go straight to my head, get focussed, think too much. But this new exercise is giving me huge energy! This makes me think that not being light, rather being depressed or stressed, sucks a…

More thoughts on arts, both kung fu and others

I've been thinking more about why we should study martial arts or any other art, even if we never have to defend ourselves or become professional artists.

I speak from the viewpoint of a violin/viola teacher and relatively new blue belt student of kung fu, so I can experience these arts from both sides, the beginner and the expert. It has been so many years since I have been a beginning/intermediate student of music, that it is hard to recall what it was like, but learning Kung Fu…

Thoughts on art, legacy, and the meaning of life :)

Tonight I went to forms class and was the only one there, so I got a private lesson. There was some real weather, which probably kept everyone else at home.

Mr. Bronson and I ended up discussing legacy, our connection to history, and what  we can do to preserve some sort of context for our arts. He has talked of this in some classes, explaining where our forms originated, where his teachers came from; and for me this had the lovely perfume of a plea to us - please remember our…

restorative agriculture and our food supply

We've been trying to apply some permaculture principles in our garden. I planted comfrey around the drip lines of two fruit trees, and then put down newspapers and dirt/compost under the tree, with oregano, chives and wild arugula on top of that. The comfrey mines the soil for minerals and makes excellent mulch. It seems to blanket the tree roots well, and the trees are doing fabulously. We're rid of that pesky grass, and the herbs are in flower. For the first time, the pears don't have…

Free kid's kung fu pants

observations from our small plot of land

This year we have seen only one bat. We also have noticed very few insects. Usually I have to be vigilant about making sure no water is standing in a tub or pot, because mosquitos would reproduce in it, but this year we have seen none. Also, we have seen very few swallows, when usually we have a lot. Every year we have a pair that nest in one of our nesting boxes, and this year they returned and laid eggs, but the baby chicks died and the parents disappeared. We wonder if there has been so…

weapons disarm class

I loved that class. I was a bit sore from a good forms class Friday night, and then I went on a 3.5 mile hike on somewhat hilly ground Saturday morning, so by the end of the weapons disarm class I was pretty tired. It was a great day for getting exercise! And the class was excellent. Those who missed it really missed out!

cleaning the cupboards

Today I was cleaning out cupboards, getting rid of some out of date things, finding a few things for the chickens, when I found...an old bottle of CANOLA OIL!!! Eeeeek! Out with it!

It is now in the trash can. I think it must have come with me when I first got divorced and moved into this house, it was tucked so far back in the cupboard.

It's important for me to go through stuff, shed things. Each time I do it the bar is set higher, and while I once thought some things were…

roundup on sugarcane

Elizabeth Dougherty is a food writer and blogger. She spoke with someone at USDA who told her that sugarcane is routinely sprayed with roundup to make it ripen faster. Check out her site at elizabethdougherty.com.

I use organic sugar for all everyday stuff, and I'm using more and more honey and maple syrup, but occasionally we have used cane sugar (sugar beet sugar we never buy) for a large expensive thing, such as blackberry wine. Now I will have to cut down production and get an… Continue

Frustration-

Today I am especially feeling frustrated. I was reading on old post from Mr. Bronson about chemicals in our hoses, as well as many older posts and new posts about how we lost 30% of our bees in the US (again), which now means that the almond/blueberry/apple crops will probably not get pollinated. We have reached that critical low point.

Why do we have to work SO HARD NOT TO POISON OURSELVES?!? Why do we have to do tons of research in hard to find places so as NOT to kill our…

raw goat milk shutdown

A local farmer was my source of raw goat's milk cheese. He was very low profile, sold only to friends. He lives in the hills around Newberg, and now he has been shut down by the state and can no longer make the raw goat's milk products. This is happening everywhere. I also received notice that Kookoolan Farms suddenly decided to no longer sell raw cow's milk. They had decided, they wrote, that the risk was too great. I suspect they mean the risk to themselves and their business.

mindful eating and drinking and thoughts over my morning coffee

We are working on being really present and mindful when we eat. This morning I am enjoying some organic Ethiopian coffee roasted by a friend who has a roastery in Portland. This is a lighter roast than I usually like, but I decided to explore it and found that the aroma of the ground beans (before putting on the hot water) is really "vegetable-y". It smells like a bean, like something you would find outdoors! My roaster friend is the one who opened my eyes to the GMO coffee out there. Almost… Continue

nettles

I have been drinking the nettle water that I learned about in Sue's herb class a while back. I've tried various mixtures - one had nettles and mint and oatstraw, and the most recent, which is now may favorite, has nettles and lemon balm. I drink it with a bit of ice, to make it a bit festive, and I find it helps with the hayfever. When I forget to make some or drink what I have, the hayfever is worse. I make a batch of about a quart at a time, just to be sure not to have some get too old to… Continue

Icky air fresheners

I teach in a few students' homes, and there is one family in Beaverton... they have a lovely clean home, and their son is my student. He is a wonderful fellow, good student. But the problem is that they use these air freshener things that you plug into outlets, and they are absolutely VILE. Within minutes I feel like throwing up, and I get light headed. THey have these things in EVERY ROOM! THey also have flushable wipes in their bathrooms, and the list of ingredients is scary, all chemicals… Continue

Reflux

I wanted to thank Sue for her posts relating to reflux. I've taken all sweet things, even most honey, and grains out of my diet, and my reflux, which was terrible, even interfering with my kung fu classes (often thought I would suddenly throw up during class!), is GONE! I have experimented a bit, and found that even my homemade granola, which has oats and quinoa and honey, aggravates it a bit. On my birthday, I ate a piece of birthday cake and the reflux returned within 5 minutes! THere it… Continue

sweets

Johanna had a craving for marshmallows, so I decided to make some with her. We used organic ingredients (except couldn't find any organic flavorless gelatin - any tips on where to get that are welcome!). We made almond flavoured marshmallows with lots of cocoa powder and only a little bit of powdered sugar on them, and they turned out great. Still, one can get tired of marshmallows...

I don't view them as a great snack, since they have corn syrup and sugar, but if she craves them, it's… Continue

Herbicides and Parkinson's

A friend of mine who often argues with me about the importance of eating organic (she sees no difference between organic and conventional food) seems to be getting Parkinson's, and she is in her late fifties. I know there is plenty of information out there about the connection between early onset Parkinson's and herbicides! I would bet that Sue has even posted something somewhere on this site about it.

A BIG reason to eat organic! I have been hearing lately about a lot of people (friends… Continue

Using up big zucchini

I have been grating them, as well as yellow beet, ginger, and carrots, adding cut peppers and parsley, oil and vinegar and sea salt and pepper. Makes a healthy and substantial salad, and uses up those torpedoes lurking in my pantry! I just add whatever I find that looks good and needs to be used up.

Healthy and delicious dip

Yesterday I made this delicious dip: put in the cuisinart the following items-

A half bunch of celery, chopped roughly

A big bunch of parsley, chopped roughly

A cup or so of pre-soaked sunflower seeds (no shells)

Two chunks of Moroccan preserved lemon

A smallish onion, chopped roughly

A bit of sea salt

One smashed clove of garlic

A spoonful of miso optional (I didn't use any)

Blend to desired consistency, eat on crackers or bread or veggie… Continue

Dinner of Simply Grown Beef

For my mom's 75th birthday dinner I made Boeuf Bourgignon with Brian's Simply Grown Beef and some organic veggies, and it was delicious. Served it over brown rice.  The side salad was orange slices, pear, and pomegranite, all organic. Dessert was a Serbian Walnut Cake, one of my favorite recipes. It is very rich, with a stick of butter in the frosting, hardly any flour, and lots and lots of walnuts. A good time was had by all. Brian's beef is great!
