This past week I have had to make some minor adjustments to training and life goals. We had a large retreat for middle schooler this past weekend. It was a great time together, but I came back with something wrong with my thumb (intense dog pile moment), patches of poison oak, and sleep deprivation. It was worth it. We climbed a mountain, played lots of hoops, volleyball, and had intense pillow fights. Kung Fu has increased my pillow fighting skills exponentially. Thanks Mr. Bronson.
I had to pack my working through my material early last week to free up time for the retreat. This week I am having to go through the material at super slow speed because I am trying to keep my poison oak from spreading and my left hand has a hard time with the stick right now because of the thumb soreness.
Now ... I came in to class last night thinking that I would take it easy, but then anyone asked if people were sparring and three guys raised their hands and before I knew it my hand was up. The joy of getting to spar with those guys trumped the poison oak, thumb, and sleep deprivation issues. And again, it was worth it. I hadn't experience that level of sparring for some time. Now, my poison oak did spread a bit. My thumb got hit a few times and now my right hand is swollen a bit (I went to block Ryan's roundhouse kick and my forefinger was the only thing that was able to get up in time. This pain should help me remember to keep my check hand up :) So again, short term adjustments are required for the week to recover and heal. I plan on staying at home for the rest of the week and stretching during class time.
The long term adjustment is a sad one for me. We are going to need to pay 10 times more taxes than I was anticipating. This will severely limit the private classes that I was planning on taking over the next couple of months.
