Kora (Hello) from Namibia,

My wife and I are now in Namibia.  While Oregon is settling into the wet and cold, Namibia is heading into the hot and dry.  Hopefully, it will be the hot and wet as the country is in the midst of its worst drought in 30 years.

Fundamentally, life here is the same as life at home. We work, we play, we run errands. The towns and cities where we have been staying are every bit as modern as Oregon.  Currently, we are staying in Swakopmund. It is a coastal resort town.  It was settled by the Germans around 1880 and many people still converse in German. It also has an abundance of historic German architecture.  Needless to say, Swakopmund is a popular German tourist destination.

Outside the city and slightly in-land are sand dunes; magnificent red sand dunes.  The dunes then give way to dry desert scrub.  It is wide open and offers abundant solitude, but it demands respect and preparedness.

My wife wrote an excellent pictorial blog on the Namib desert.  I have attached a link.  http://goal42.wordpress.com/2013/12/08/the-sheltering-desert/

Next week we will travel north along the coast, and then we will travel to the central/northern area of the country and visit its famous Etosha National Park.

We wish everyone a wonderful holiday season.

Cheers to a new year.

Ken
