One of the things I like about Kung fu is that it is not just self defense or nutritional defense but that  it is a life style. In my Kung fu life style I have cut out a lot of TV because it is a huge time waster. I have limited my TV watching to 4hrs per week;mostly noncommercial documentaries. I recently wanted to watch a program by one of the big broadcasting companies that is based on a novel I have read by Steven King. The pilot and two other episodes were 3/4 of my weekly allowance with the advertisements and only slightly entertaining. The next day, however, I awoke with the feeling that I needed air freshener and a new Dodge pickup. I'm not kidding! I was brainwashed after all those commercials. I fought the urge to buy the truck but I did check the prices online. Then I found  a natural room deodorizer growing in my own yard;some lavender that I have neglected. The lavender smells like my Grandfather's shaving cream. Problem solved. I know this sounds funny, but I'm serious. Try to find natural solutions for household needs and protect your self from the brainwashing of commercial television.

Great post David. My wife and I gave our tv to Goodwill five years ago and have never gone back. Love the space it has given. If there is really something I want to watch now (college basketball finals or a documentary) I need to do a little extra work to get there and I usually end up spending the time with a friend catching up on life at their place. It is a good natural boundary to the dangers of tv.
