This is very interesting. I'm still taking it all in.  I suspect the answer is somewhere in between. They make a big deal about his semi-automatic rifle. Really? A clip is such a big deal? I do agree that this will be used as a demand for more gun control, but from what I read, the guy didn't have a lot of huge guns. There is indeed more than meets the eye here. I think it is plausible that a grad student had time to read up on bombs etc and time to train in weapons use. Still, his behaviour is very odd, and many other things don't add up.
