....guess what is not in any food in italy?........high fructose corn syrup......guess what is not in the milk in Italy......hormones.......nor are there genetically modified foods.  We have also found that there is far less sugar put in the foods here.  Even the pastries, while delicious are not sickly sweet.

Furthermore, when we shop for food everyday at the public market, the fruit and vegetables are ripe.  It is expected that the food is to be eaten soon after being picked. The food is not picked while still green and shipped half way across the globe. It is such a pleasant surpise to get home from market and bite into a juicy ripe peach instead of having to wait a week for it to ripen.....Side note....anyone ever notice how american grocery stores will cast a warm ambient yellow light on their bananas?  You get the bananas home and they seem so green.

We first became aware of this as we noticed that food would not keep in our fridge. First I thought that Italy must have mutant mold.....ok...not really, but I was still suprised by how quickly we would find mold on our food.  I imagine Italians traveling to the USA would be surprised at how long our food keeps....."boy, those americans sure are advanced, their food keeps forever"....

We  find that the fresh bread we buy everyday only has a 4-5 day shelf life.  The fresh yogurt we buy gets moldy within 5-6 days.  The cheese, the fruit, etc....is the same.

So, we have changed our food buying habits from those we had states-side. We only buy what we will eat within 48 hours....its a good thing, and we find that we waste less food.

We have gone native, although this weekend I tried a local delicacy called lampredotto.  Its a spicy meat sandwich. The meat is the fourth stomach of a cow......I think I will stick to hamburgers.

Oh, final note....we notice far less obesity over here.......hmm.

Great post Ken and thank you for keeping us updated on your over sea adventure. You know how important food is to me and it sounds like you are eating great. I hope the workouts are going great with all that awesome food.
