FOOD COLORING Propylene glycol & Propylparaben - Your Children s Health

What is on my mind today is all the food coloring people, especially children are about to ingest. I think it is time that I provide some educational notes, on food colors. What I am about to tell you and give you links to, IS THE INGREDIENTS IN FOOD COLORING.  Yes, that means all the red dye (and other food colors) that is about to enter the innocent tummys of so many young children and adults. Why, it is even aloud I will never understand. I have my theory's, but you don't want me to go there.

First lets go over the basic ingredients that on on the back of the box of any artifical colors, that you buy from your grocery store.  This is off the McCormick's box

Here is the link:http://www.mccormick.com/Products/Extracts-and-Food-Colors/Food-Col...

Ingredients:

WATER, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, FD&C REDS 40 AND 3, AND 0.1% PROPYLPARABEN (PRESERVATIVE).

When food company's buy PROPYLENE GLYCOL they are handed an MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET

Here is the link:  http://www.sciencelab.com/msds.php?msdsId=9927239

Propylene glycol is classified as a solvent that stabilizes the ingredients in a given synthetic product.

These sections 3 and 11 are right off the safety sheet

Section 3: Hazards Identification
Potential Acute Health Effects:
Hazardous in case of ingestion. Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant, permeator), of eye contact (irritant), of
inhalation.
Potential Chronic Health Effects:
Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (sensitizer). CARCINOGENIC EFFECTS: Not available. MUTAGENIC EFFECTS:
Not available. TERATOGENIC EFFECTS: Not available. DEVELOPMENTAL TOXICITY: Not available. The substance may be
toxic to central nervous system (CNS). Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target organs damage.

Look at the first health hazard, hazardous in case of ingestion.

Section 11: Toxicological Information
Routes of Entry: Absorbed through skin. Eye contact.
Toxicity to Animals:
Acute oral toxicity (LD50): 18500 mg/kg [Rabbit]. Acute dermal toxicity (LD50): 20800 mg/kg [Rabbit].
Chronic Effects on Humans: May cause damage to the following organs: central nervous system (CNS).
Other Toxic Effects on Humans:
Hazardous in case of ingestion. Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant, permeator), of inhalation.
Special Remarks on Toxicity to Animals: Not available.
Special Remarks on Chronic Effects on Humans:
May affect genetic material (mutagenic). May cause adverse reproductive effects and birth defects (teratogenic) based on
animal test data.
Special Remarks on other Toxic Effects on Humans:
Acute Potential Health Effects: Skin: May cause mild skin irritation. It may be absorbed through the skin and cause systemic
effects similar to those of ingestion. Eyes: May cause mild eye irritation with some immediate, transitory stinging, lacrimation,
blepharospasm, and mild transient conjunctival hyperemia. There is no residual discomfort or injury once it is washed
away. Inhalation: May cause respiratory tract irritation. Ingestion: It may cause gastrointestinal tract irritation. It may affect
behavior/central nervous system(CNS depression, general anesthetic, convulsions, seizures, somnolence, stupor, muscle
contraction or spasticity, coma), brain (changes in surface EEG), metabolism, blood (intravascular hemolysis, white blood
cells - decreased neutrophil function), respiration (respiratory stimulation, chronic pulmonary edema, cyanosis), cardiovascular
system(hypotension, bradycardia, arrhythmias, cardiac arrest), endocrine system (hypoglycemia), urinary system (kidneys),
and liver. Chronic Potential Health Effects: Skin: Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause allergic contact dermatitis.
Ingestion: Prolonged or repeated ingestion may cause hyperglycemia and may affect behavior/CNS (symptoms similar to that
of acute ingestion). Inhalation: Prolonged or repeated inhalation may affect behavior/CNS (with symptoms similar to ingestion),

You will notice that I underlined damage/central nervous system.  I have worked with children for 20 years, I have watched a zillion times how red dye affects behavior.

The material safety data sheet is a safety sheet for Propylene glycol  and yes this is for a chemical that is just all chemical, but let me ask all who read this,  why is it allowed, even in a microscopic dose.

Let me remind you that cancer is at its highest ever.  If we keep allowing all these microscopic doses of toxic chemicals in our children's food, adult food, pet food, and yes even fish food all disease are going to increase.

The other ingredient that is in food coloring: Propylparaben

Propylparaben is utilized in both the cosmetics and food industry. It is composed of white powder crystals that act as a preserving agent in a liquid. Propylparaben prevents the growth of mold and fungus and has no taste or smell.

Propylparaben is more toxic than propylene glycol

Please go to the link and read the material data safety sheet on this chemical

When you read this little paragraph on the right side of McCormicks page, it seems to me that something you have to use bleach on to get the stain out IS NOT healthy to ingest!

FOOD COLOR CLEANUP

Moms, are you wondering about food color cleanup?
To remove colors from hands, wash repeatedly with soap and water. For countertops, use an all-purpose cleaner with bleach. Consult a professional for help with upholstery, rugs, or carpet.

So our children just ate red hot candies, valentines day hearts, cupcakes with red frosting etc....

Remember it takes bleach to get it off the counter top and if it does not come off your furniture you need to call for professional help with a upholstery cleaner.

You will be surprised when you start reading labels how many things have food coloring.

My ending statement is this, some people think it is ok to eat bad things once in a while, or several times a month.  And same goes with eating these toxic treats.  But let me ask you this,

Is it ok to kiss a bad person once in a while?

I am pretty sure the answer is NO for all of you.  Why don't you treat your body with the same respect?  I think it is time for all of us to truly fight diseases like diabetes, cancer, heart disease.  Which now are the top three dangerous diseases .

Start reading labels and create  new healthy habits for you, your children, your childrens children and on......................

In SEVEN GENERATIONS I would love to see a healthly human race and a healthy earth.  Remember these ingredients pollute our water and air and do belong in the hazardous waste dump

Peace to all

Thanks for posting! It's important to be reminded. I would bet these chemicals are even in ice cream.

Yes, ice cream, cookies, cereal,  frozen food bars,   It is very important to read labels.  Something I forgot to mention is that imitation flavors have the same ingredients.  Example:  Imitation vanilla, lemon, etc..,.

Make every Egg green, easy natural egg dyeing tips.

I've always used red onion skins. First I wrap a raw egg with little flowers and weeds, then wrap on the onion skins. Then wrap securely with something like newspaper or a stocking and tie like a package. Boil for at least 15 minutes to get good color. I like to use thyme because the tiny leaves make a nice pattern. Also violets or other colorful little plants. The flowers and leaves add some of their own color, lending the eggs a shadowy/dappled look. I just take the onion skins from the onion bin at the store, they never mind that. But now I will try the other dyes mentioned in that article. Thanks for posting it!

Red 40 increases my chances of having seizures it's bad stuff for me.

Yes Markkus, it is bad for you, but no one should be eating it.

I am glad to hear you do not.

Have a great day
