I am a Sifu (also certified as an expert level Guru in the Indonesian Martial Arts). Sifu or Guru both mean basically the same thing - Teacher.
One person teaching another person some kind of activity or skill is our basic concept of a teacher. But this leaves a great deal of leeway in terms of the quality of the lessons being given and received. …

Some thoughts on having a successful Kung Fu journey.
#1. You must be definite in your goal setting. If you study Kung Fu with no chief aim in mind then you will most certainly fail. Set the goal of becoming a Black Belt. If you are a Black Belt then set your goal as the next degree of Black Belt (there are ten degrees in our system).…

Greetings to everyone from the beautiful coastal mountains of Western Oregon. I have had a great deal of time to think about the situation that we have been going through. I do believe that it will take some work, but I see us being stronger as individuals and as a nation when we have learned the lessons afforded us by this predicament.
I have heard wonderful reports of many of you training on your own. That is so awesome. Keep…

This morning, after my tea, I decided to melt into all of existence. I cleared my mind and began the process of blending into everything. This practice is quite powerful and takes a great deal of dedicated effort to see the benefits. More on the specific practice another time.
Well into the process I found myself floating through the…

No one begins an activity like Kung Fu believing that they are going to fail.
Yet, failure is what greets most people anywhere from a couple of months up to several years of practice.
Failure is…

What is reasonable is failure. We see it around us all of the time. There is so much failure that surrounds us that it has become what we expect without even thinking about it.
I propose that you practice being unreasonable. When family members, friends or even just casual associates balk at what you are doing to move forward in your martial studies. They are truly saying that they believe your dedication to this practice of self development is unreasonable. They believe that you…

Success. What an interesting word. There may be no other word in the English language that can be interpreted so many different ways. The best definition that I have ever found is this:
"Success is to be found when a person is committed to achieving a worthy goal, and not willing to give up until said goal is accomplished."
Understand that the completion of the goal is not success. That may be the end point of that particular journey. But, success has already been achieved when…

My thoughts on the health of our digestive systems.
ARE YOU DIGESTING LIFE: by Sue Sanders
The digestive system is interesting and complicated. It is full of winding paths, good bacteria (your friends) and bad bacteria (bad people). It has the good, the bad and the ugly.
Just…

Ease and Convenience are two demons that are continually trying to pull us down. Fight them with all of your heart. The battle itself will take a lifetime. But, without facing these demons down on a daily basis you will live a life of Ease and Convenience. Which is, of course, a path to self destruction. Ease and Convenience have…

Kung Fu is a philosophy, not a martial art like so many people believe. If a student of mine tells someone that they do Kung Fu. The question is often asked "what style?" This question shows that the person asking actually does not know what "Kung Fu" means.
When we think of the term "Kung Fu" we often think of iconic figures like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan or Jet Li. That is because popular culture has put that in front of our eyes to demean Kung Fu and put it in the category of…

You are what you habitually do. We all know this to be true. As long as we are habitually working on our Kung Fu then we are, over time, gaining all of the benefits of that course of action.
So why are people not super successful at Kung Fu (or any of their other chosen activities)? This is because habit is not something we do for a little while, once in a while. A habit is something we consistently do over and over again. Often until the day we die.
For some reason…

I am not here to play.
If being a warrior was about play then everyone would be warriors. Can you have fun in the study of Kung Fu? Yes, but if fun is the main objective then I am afraid that you will never go far.
Training is grueling, time consuming, hard, often boring and sometimes painful. Being very very physical, injuries can and do occur. When injury occurs the student must look at the healing process as the most vital part of their training. The student must…

No one discusses the topic of failure very often. But it is always looking over your shoulder. Failure is walking beside you on every step of your warrior journey
We must confront the fact that we could fail at any moment. This failure would come from our choice to stop pushing forward towards our stated goals.
Simply put, you are already successful if you have not given up. If you are on the path. If you are steadfast in your determination. If you are committed and…
