Fifth year anniversary

I started my KungFu journey five years ago this past week. It's changed my life.

KungFu has opened up for me an awareness into infinite possibilities. The physical and mental challenges in practicing KungFu has given me great rewards. I'm stronger, more flexible, focused, more aware, quicker in reflexes, calmer, and happier. I know the more I practice the Kungfu principles that Sifu has taught me the richer and more whole my life becomes.

The KungFu jouney has been the toughest thing I… Continue

Mock Intermediate Forms test

Last Friday Dave helped me with a mock intermediate forms test. I started with doing nine of the twelve forms four times in different directions. The other three forms I did twice. Then I did the six staff basic drills for one minute each.

Then the workout started do get hard. Dave ran me through a series of forms at different speeds and combinations. I ended up doing a total of 88 forms. It was physically and mentally challenging; just what I needed. My legs were sore for… Continue

Working hard towards Intermediate forms test.

My forms test is set for less then two months from now. I am trying to increase my stamina to perform forms for the one and a half hour test.

Trying to come up with a workout schedule to follow and sustain has been challenging for me. I have tried several different versions of training. But now I decided what I need more of is, MORE FORMS.

Also I have been negative in my thoughts toward the test. Yes the test will be hard, and will take me to the limits of my physicality. But I've… Continue

Stick and dagger seminar

Who knew that stick and dagger comes full circle with Muhammad Ali, I didn't. I'm glad I attended this seminar not only for the new knowledge but the dedicated focus on these two weapons use.

After we went through our basic stick and dagger drills for some extended focused training, we dove into the art of the weapons. Sifu opened up our eyes to numerous variations that can be taken off our basic lines.

Now I wish I could describe them to you because they are the "bomb" of… Continue

Starting the climb

Today on my day off I started training for my intermediate forms test. I plan on taking the test with in the next four to six months. After today's training session I relised this is going to be one steep hill to get in shape for this hour and a half test.

I still have a fresh memory of my beginning forms test that I took last June. It was just one hour but when I was done my body was wiped out physically. Right after the test I wrote down what Sifu had me do during the test. I won't… Continue

Easy access knife.

I don't own this knife but it looks intriguing for its ease of access. The ring on the handle is intriguing to me also. I thought I would throw this out here in case anybody might be interested. Opinions?

AWSOME weapons disarm seminar!

Last Saturday's seminar was another great warrior development class. To disarm an enemy is like any skill, it has to be learned then practiced. If you don't learn this skill your understanding of the martial arts will be lacking.
Sifu was spitting out temple secrets left and right. My brain was on overload. One thing I will always remember, the answer to any fighting scenario question is........
Make the next seminar and you might get the answer.

Jim's Benefit #6

Benefit number six is play sparring in class. Both empty hand and weapons sparring is fun because, it is PLAY.

In my adult life I don't do sport activities with other people like I did when I was young. I used to play organized soccer and baseball, but that was a long time ago. Even those sports activities were to serious and less play, unlike sparring which is more play then serious. I feel sparring is more like a game I would have played as a kid like tag, or dodge ball. It is that… Continue

Trigger word seminar!

I enjoyed this emotionally tough seminar. The trigger word is a tool that we don't learn in regular classes, but I feel can be extremely powerful in my self defense arsenal. In some drastic situations there might not be enough time to think, so the trigger word can be used to get your subconscious on high alert for action. Sifu told us that the trigger word, if practiced in the way he taught us, can be used to clear our minds and prepare our body for whatever action a situation calls… Continue

Last nights Black belt class

Great Black belt class last night. For the few Black belts that missed it,(yea, you know who you are) I just want you to know that Sifu brought forward some eye opening temple secrets. The base techniques that we learned for Black belt seems to be just the outer layer on the onion. Hidden in the movements of the the techniques are pathways to all movements. Sifu peeled back another layer so we could peek into our understanding of movement that eludes the inexperienced.

Try to make the next… Continue

Great Saturday

I went to the nine o'clock class today and enjoyed practicing with Mercedes, Ian, Angela, and Phil. We had a great time doing sticks and punches.

Then I went to Sue's wellness class at ten. Me, Vicki and Anthony joined Sue for some great tea, then Sue outlined her seven week class. It is going to be great, we are starting early on fighting off the holiday ten pounds that most people gain during that time.

11:30 Sifu held his FREE green belt and higher class. He passed on his thoughts… Continue

Jim's benefit #5

Benefit Five is reaction time, or more correctly the subconscious taking over my body and reacting to stimuli from my eyes.

I have seen a very noticeable increase in this benefit. When things drop off counters, out of my locker, or out of my cabinets at home, I can catch them with ease. And when ever I do it, I'm amazed. It almost feels like what I think a superhero could do. So it's pretty cool to know I have that skill building inside me from my Kungfu practice. I guess the benefit is… Continue

Jim's benefit #4

Kungfu is fun! I see benefits in having something fun to look forward to twice a week. It is fun to be with my fellow students learning, sweating, and becoming better at the martial arts. I love feeding off of the different energies as we rotate partners during class.

I enjoy the mini speeches Sifu gives throughout class. His enlightening perspective on the movements he's teaching. He explains Kungfu concepts from so many different ways. I can only marvel at the depth of his knowledge that… Continue

Jim's benefit #3

Mental focus. I can now focus a lot better then I could before Kungfu. One of the great mental drills in Kungfu is to focus on one thing while you let your subconscious move your body. It has taken me almost ten months after my black belt test to bring forth this concept at a more regular basis. Being disciplined in mental focus frees up my subconscious to react quicker. I feel this is increasing my movement skills, which is allowing me to release more of my physical potential. I am excited to… Continue

Jim's benefit #2

This ones easy.

I try to go to as many Kungfu classes as I can. This includes weekends and upper belt classes. During these classes Sifu teaches a lot of things. He really can blow your mind with all the mental aspects of Kungfu. But this benefit to Kungfu is on a more physical nature.

This benefit is seen in your own mirror. If you go to class on a regular basis your body will transform. I look into the mirror now and I know, Kungfu is a huge benefit.

Benefit #2:… Continue

Nourishing Qi by Robert Peng

"Stand or sit comfortably- you can even lie down if you like. Relax and close your eyes. There is beautiful light everywhere, both inside of you and outside of you. You are floating in this light. Just let the energy you cultivated flow where it wants to go. Allow it to be absorbed by your cells, internal organs, and even by your bone marrow. Let your body "feast" on the rich and nutritious Qi for at least ten seconds. Imagine that you are a sponge soaking in a warm bath and finish by repeating… Continue

Jim's Kungfu benefit #1

"We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better, stronger, faster."
Yes this is a quote from a TV show, but I thought of this when Sifu asked us to express what benefits Kung fu has on our lives.
