I'm not just talking about training for the half marathon with my wife and son. I'm talking about all of life. I'm a warrior/philosopher and I have been on this journey since I was 7 yrs. old. I have been working most of my life at understanding how the journey of being a warrior affected the rest of my life. Without this connection the activity of studying the martial arts has much less meaning.
As long as you are alive you are on this journey. Whether you know it or not.…

The journey is everything. Destination gives us something to aim for. It is important to have destination in mind otherwise the journey would seem futile. But when we hold the destination to be more important than the journey we end up loosing 98% of the experience. Are you paying attention to your journey? What are you doing each and every day to improve yourself along the way? I ask these questions of all of my students because I ask these questions of myself. Today I went up the mountain…

Today was a great run. I ran the hill back and forth for three miles. For those of you who are unsure of the hill we run it is Lathum Road. It is where Coleman Winery is. Coleman Winery is at the top. I ran the 3 miles in exactly 30 minutes. Keep in mind this is a steep hill. I am so happy with my time! I have had an average of 11 minutes per mile. The difference was my 11 minute time included race walking/running. Today I did jog/run/sprint. I felt great and could have kept going. Sunday will…

Exercise is one of the hardest things for people to be consistent on. I have worked with people for years and this seems to be one of the biggest struggles. I believe that this on and off again training is taught at a young age and then as we become adults we start having issues with weight. Exercise becomes the most important thing to be healthier and people just won't do it. I believe this problem of not exercising consistently is going to cause many more problems in the near future. I can't…

Today was a great day we spent two hours up on the mountain. Walked up the mountain early this morning with the horses and dog. We made tea up there and just enjoy our morning. It was a little cool this morning (42) so the wool clothes are always great to have. Just made a yummy dinner. It was my own sprouted bean sprouts, purple cabbage from my garden, our eggs, Growing Wilds green onions and peppers then some garlic, ginger, Jasmine brown rice, Braggs and all of it rolled into a rice wrap.…

With all the running on the country roads, I am really missing my mountain! We keep having these short walks up there with the horses and dog. It hasn't felt very satisfying being so quick and I am sure the animals are feeling cheated. I did my 10 mile run on Wed and it felt great. I even ran all of grapevine hill and to the finish without any race-walking. I ran my 10 miles doing 11:03 minutes per mile and that was with a 2 minute time loss because of drinking water and sucking on a honey/bee…

This morning I was all prepared for a seven mile run. Then at the beginning of the run my wife tells me that she is going to go for ten miles since she missed our last ten mile run. Me, being the great husband that I am, decided that I would do my first seven miles and then turn around and encourage my wife for another three miles. So my surprise this morning was thinking that I would do seven miles and instead it turned into ten + miles. It felt good. We will be doing a practice half marathon…

Well today was our 7 mile run day. I decided after the first 5 I was going to do 5 more. I was excited about my time for the 5 miles, it was just under 11:00 minutes. I thought for sure I was going to be way slower for the next 5 miles. I started slow and I had about two minutes lost getting water and our honey bee pollen mixture. There was a lot of pain off and on in my legs and side aches, but I just keep talking to myself with positive words. I even ran the whole grapevine hill, just kept…

Well, I have been taking care of myself for these last few days. I've had to walk the runs and walk them slow. Talk about torture! As I watch Dakota and Joseph run ahead of me on our runs, whey ahead. My mind says just run a little, I say no, 2 seconds later they are getting ahead, I say no, ok slow jog, I said NO ! To make yourself slow down is so hard! This has been a great lesson. I am not even sure I should run tomorrow but mind my keeps saying let's go, let's run. So tomorrow, we have 7…

Did 2 miles this morning in preparation for the 7 mile run that we have planned for tomorrow. The half marathon is coming up fast. The date for it is Sunday Sept. 5th This morning I really pushed myself on the 2 miles and I made it in just under 16 min. That is a little better than 8 min. miles. This is the first time that I have ran under 8 min. miles since we started this training. I have come close one other time but this time I made it. It felt as hard as some of the longer runs because…

Years ago I was running up misery ridge at Smith Rock State Park in central Oregon. I was in training for another kickboxing match. This particular morning I had a friend running with me that had been a very hard training partner for a while and he was getting ready for his first kickboxing match. I was ahead of him by a considerable distance when I stopped to take a rest. The run is very hard. There is a reason why it is called misery ridge. So, while I was catching my breath he caught up to…

Today Dakota and I made our first 10 mile run in preparation for the half marathon coming up. I believe it is the farthest that I have ever ran at one time. As part of my training I have ran most of my life. But, in shorter distances. I do not believe that I have ever ran over 8 miles at one time. Added to my other kung fu training that is still quite a lot.…

Well, today I woke up to do our two mile run and it ended up being a day that a woman needs to rest her body and not do heavy exercise. So the bummer part is this will include our 10 mile run for me tomorrow but, this works out great for the day of the 1/2 marathon!. I will walk, not race walk, 5 miles while Dakota and Joseph run the 10 miles. I will hopefully do my 10 miles on Wed. or Thursday. In the mean time it is light walking for me to keep my body moving. This morning I only walked a…

This is the day before the big run. We will be doing our first 10 mile run tomorrow morning in preparation for the half marathon. This morning I did 2 miles just to keep things loose. Half of it was hard uphill and I still almost made the 8 min. per mile mark. Awesome. I will be going slow tomorrow just to get a feel for ten miles. It should be a great challenge.
What is your challenge. Blog about it and let others know what it is that you are doing to live Kung Fu.

Today will become a rest day. Saturday was suppose to be the day but we are switching it. I did not sleep good last night. I kept waking up with energy jolts. We did get up about 3:30 am to watch the meteor shower. I was dizzy just moving my head so at that point I told myself this has to be the rest day It was a beautiful night out last night and we watched the shower for about 30 minutes plus. Went back to bad and slept in till 8:30am WOW!
My body still feels really sluggish and slow but…

Sue and I lead a very active life. Along with our normally active life we work out hard. Training for this half marathon has added an extra push that is staining the body, in good ways, that must be dealt with effectively. Today we are a little extra sore and the muscles feel fatigued. So it is a day off to rest the body and get ready for our 10 mile run on Sunday. Monday I should feel great. The run on Sunday will be the farthest that I have ever ran at one time.
What is…

I WAS ON MY WAY BACK FROM KUNG FU VIA PUBLIC TRANSIT. THERE WAS A FIVE YEAR OLD BOY SITTING BESIDE ME WHO NOTICED MY UNIFORM AND SAID, "I HAVE A KUNG FU ACTION FIGURE!" "COOL", I ENTHUSED. THEN HE ASKED ME IF I
WANTED TO FEEL HIS MUSCLE AND OF COURSE HOW COULD I REFUSE AN OFFER
LIKE THAT? THEN HE ASKED TO FEEL MY MUSCLE AND SO I OBLIGED. HE LOOKED UP AT ME AND SAID, "WOW!…

I have never grown or seen any growth without the associated pain that must come with the expanding of oneself. I mean this on every level of life. Mentally, Emotionally, Physically, you can not get away from the fact that you are not going to get the growth that you desire without pain. I say all of this because of my pain in helping Sue and Dakota train for the half marathon. It feels great, not the pain, but the results. I train hard all of the time but this long distance running is…

Well this morning we ran our route. Felt pretty good. I had to motivate myself off and on. I did a lot of race walking /running in the first mile and half and ran most of it back. My time was 33 minutes. It seems it takes me a mile or more just to warm up. I have been so stiff and sore since my birthday run that I have not even be able to get my running stride yet! Every run so far I have not ran the whole thing. I have been race walking/ running with no stopping. I have been able to keep it at…

Well it is time for the 5:30 in the morning rise and go run our gravel route. It is so early that when I was walking over to the house to get on the computer to type this, my body could barely walk. It was like walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night and you pretty much sleep walk there.
So, at this moment I am drinking a greens drink, we are waking Dakota up and then we will be on our way.
I think Dakota will be sleep running with me. We have started a new sport sleep…
