Jim's benefit #5

Benefit Five is reaction time, or more correctly the subconscious taking over my body and reacting to stimuli from my eyes.

I have seen a very noticeable increase in this benefit. When things drop off counters, out of my locker, or out of my cabinets at home, I can catch them with ease. And when ever I do it, I'm amazed. It almost feels like what I think a superhero could do. So it's pretty cool to know I have that skill building inside me from my Kungfu practice. I guess the benefit is… Continue

More thoughts on arts, both kung fu and others

I've been thinking more about why we should study martial arts or any other art, even if we never have to defend ourselves or become professional artists.

I speak from the viewpoint of a violin/viola teacher and relatively new blue belt student of kung fu, so I can experience these arts from both sides, the beginner and the expert. It has been so many years since I have been a beginning/intermediate student of music, that it is hard to recall what it was like, but learning Kung Fu…

Jim's benefit #4

Kungfu is fun! I see benefits in having something fun to look forward to twice a week. It is fun to be with my fellow students learning, sweating, and becoming better at the martial arts. I love feeding off of the different energies as we rotate partners during class.

I enjoy the mini speeches Sifu gives throughout class. His enlightening perspective on the movements he's teaching. He explains Kungfu concepts from so many different ways. I can only marvel at the depth of his knowledge that… Continue

Thoughts on art, legacy, and the meaning of life :)

Tonight I went to forms class and was the only one there, so I got a private lesson. There was some real weather, which probably kept everyone else at home.

Mr. Bronson and I ended up discussing legacy, our connection to history, and what  we can do to preserve some sort of context for our arts. He has talked of this in some classes, explaining where our forms originated, where his teachers came from; and for me this had the lovely perfume of a plea to us - please remember our…

Jim's benefit #3

Mental focus. I can now focus a lot better then I could before Kungfu. One of the great mental drills in Kungfu is to focus on one thing while you let your subconscious move your body. It has taken me almost ten months after my black belt test to bring forth this concept at a more regular basis. Being disciplined in mental focus frees up my subconscious to react quicker. I feel this is increasing my movement skills, which is allowing me to release more of my physical potential. I am excited to… Continue
