Understanding Kung Fu for life, health and self defense
I feel that we should strive to see each day as new. To work at making resolutions daily about how we are going to better our lives, improve our relationships and care for our health (personal and planetary) Growth in life, is so much lip service without daily action. I would like to challenge each person that reads these words to let go of the past (other then the lessons you have learned). And to, daily move into a more powerful productive and joyous future. By taking positive action,…

A quick look at what is going on in the world today is very disheartening. I don't need to go into details. You know what I am talking about unless, of course, your head is in the sand. Preparing for possible problems before they come to pass is not paranoia. It is simply following the boy scout motto "be prepared" Maybe, just maybe, nothing bad will ever happen in our life time. In which case we all live happily ever after. Yea, I vote for that outcome to come to pass. But, speaking…

What is self-defense?
We must be very clear about this issue to understand true Kung Fu. In our Kung Fu school we take a very holistic approach to the question “What is self-defense”? We see self-defense as the process of keeping ourselves from being harmed in any way. This, of course, means defending ourselves against physical attack. But, in the holistic approach, it also means mental, emotional and dietary self-defense. I would add that defense of our natural environment would be…

I thought that early Christmas mornings were for parents of small children. The kids get up super duper early and start bouncing on the bed to wake up their parents. They can't wait to dive into their stockings and see all the goodies that Santa has left.
having all of the children grown and gone means that I finally get to sleep in. At least that is what I thought. You know, the calm Christmas morning that all empty nesters get to look forward to. A warm fire. A hot cup of tea. Some…

I am a Kung Fu instructor in the old sense of the term. “Kung Fu” literally translated means “Working hard towards great accomplishment”. So the term “Kung Fu“ is all encompassing for every aspect of our lives.
In the ancient tradition that we uphold here at the Mountain Warrior Kung Fu Academy it is most important to work at being “Kung Fu” in all…

Alas, I spent all night working out the best class schedule that I have ever ran. The planets were all in alignment and the ancient secrets were going to be reveled. As I was putting the last touches on the class curriculum for tonight there was a flash of lightning and an ancient warrior god appeared. He said that I was not to teach these secret or I would put myself in great peril of offending all of the warrior gods. I laughed and said…

Well, I should have seen it coming. But, like all ex-kick boxers, I’ve taken a few too many shots to the head. Sometimes my long term memory takes a hike and I forget how things turned out last time. It’s not oldstimers or sillynelity that I’ve got. It’s just that my storage area of the brain shuts down and I open my mouth when I should have thought the situation out a little more fully.…

Q. What is the difference between Kung Fu and Karate?
A. There are so many ways to answer this question. And, to be honest, I could take hours in explaining all of the differences. In the interest of being brief, and to not bore all of you, let me put it this way.
Kung Fu is, to the martial arts world, as Ballet is to the dance world. Karate/Tae Kwon Do are, to the martial arts world, as…

How to build calm at your center in the middle of a Storm!!!!!!!

Girls can’t fight
A paradigm shift is needed if we are going to stop the humiliation, objectification and demoralization of women in our society. This paradigm shift must start with the mothers of today’s young girls.
For thirty years + I have watched as mothers would bring their sons into my martial arts school for training, often with a little girl in tow also. As the mother is signing up her son I will ask “What about your daughter? I bet she would like Kung…

This article is about expressing our differences so that there will be no confusion as to what we stand for. One of the problems in today's martial arts is the lack of understanding that there is a difference between authentic, warrior craft, survioval based self protection training. That incorporates the ideal of strengthening every aspect…

Working on a class schedule today and I am listening to beautiful flute music on Pandora. Now I don’t pay for Pandora, I just get their free version which means that I get occasional commercials. ( The price I pay for being cheap ) Usually I can tune out the commercials but this one caught me. Not because I was interested. No, far from interest. I was appalled. The commercial was for the ability to record up to 4 different programs on television at the same time.…
