An empty nesters Christmas

I thought that early Christmas mornings were for parents of small children. The kids get up super duper early and start bouncing on the bed to wake up their parents. They can't wait to dive into their stockings and see all the goodies that Santa has left.

having all of the children grown and gone means that I finally get to sleep in. At least that is what I thought. You know, the calm Christmas morning that all empty nesters get to look forward to. A warm fire. A hot cup of tea. Some…

Christmas hike

I live alone and had no plans for Christmas day. When Sue and Joseph found out they said " you're coming with us". I was invited to go on a hike around Trillium Lake, only five miles, but on snowshoes! No offence but I couldn't think of anything fun about this. The couch potato in me was imagining frost bitten fingers and toes, sore muscles and cold wet misery. I was even thinking of excuses to get out of this for example "wow guys I would love to go but I think I'm getting this chest cold…

Life journey - thoughts for 2016

I am a Kung Fu instructor in the old sense of the term. “Kung Fu” literally translated means “Working hard towards great accomplishment”. So the term “Kung Fu“ is all encompassing for every aspect of our lives.

In the ancient tradition that we uphold here at the Mountain Warrior Kung Fu Academy it is most important to work at being “Kung Fu” in all…

AWSOME weapons disarm seminar!

Last Saturday's seminar was another great warrior development class. To disarm an enemy is like any skill, it has to be learned then practiced. If you don't learn this skill your understanding of the martial arts will be lacking.
Sifu was spitting out temple secrets left and right. My brain was on overload. One thing I will always remember, the answer to any fighting scenario question is........
Make the next seminar and you might get the answer.

Flooding!!

Alas, I spent all night working out the best class schedule that I have ever ran. The planets were all in alignment and the ancient secrets were going to be reveled. As I was putting the last touches on the class curriculum for tonight there was a flash of lightning and an ancient warrior god appeared. He said that I was not to teach these secret or I would put myself in great peril of offending all of the warrior gods. I laughed and said…

Jim's Benefit #6

Benefit number six is play sparring in class. Both empty hand and weapons sparring is fun because, it is PLAY.

In my adult life I don't do sport activities with other people like I did when I was young. I used to play organized soccer and baseball, but that was a long time ago. Even those sports activities were to serious and less play, unlike sparring which is more play then serious. I feel sparring is more like a game I would have played as a kid like tag, or dodge ball. It is that… Continue
